The Volkswagen ID.3 has achieved a five-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash tests, with good ratings in all criteria. This was also the first test for a model based on the new modular electric drive matrix (MEB).
The occupant protection level for adults was determined for adults, based on factors including frontal and lateral impacts plus whiplash tests. This was 89 per cent for children; the items examined included protection from child restraint systems from frontal and lateral impacts, options for installing child seats of various categories and sizes, plus equipment for safe transportation of children.
Euro NCAP also looked at emergency braking systems (AEB) and how they can protect vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists, if a collision is imminent.
A centre airbag for the front seats - a first for a Volkswagen - prevents possible head contact, for example, between the driver and front passenger if there’s a front collision.
“This is a great success for our entire ID. team”, says Dr Frank Welsch, member of the Volkswagen Brand Board of Management responsible for Development. “A high level of safety in our vehicles is always very important to us and has therefore been incorporated into the MEB concept from the start. The ID.3 impressively demonstrates this with its five stars.”
